Abstract
Previous research has found a partner effect on voting; people with partners who vote are more likely to vote. However, partners who vote are not randomly distributed to the population. This paper contributes by studying how the partner's education level affect individual turnout, the partner education effect, in a comparative perspective. The data covers the US for a time period of more than 40 years, as well as 24 European countries over a time period of 12 years. Including the partner's education level in a model of who votes shows that the partner effect on voting participation may have been misinterpreted in the previous literature. Instead of a small positive relationship in a large proportion of the population (married people) there is a substantively larger positive impact of having a partner for a small proportion of the population, namely, the low educated who have a highly educated partner.
